Aaron Sorkin Speaks About Facebook Movie

facebookWe reported a little while ago that screenwriter / producer / creator Aaron Sorkin was developing a script for a full length feature film about the creation of Facebook. Now that the script is complete, Sorkin sat down with the people at Making Of for a quick chat about his decision to invest his time and effort into producing the screenplay. The news of a Facebook movie didn’t go over well with movie fans to begin with, in fact it was a bit confusing at first as people were unsure what the story would actually be. Now that Sorkin is speaking out about the project, we can confirm that the story isn’t actually about Facebook, it is about the creators of Facebook and how the idea was formed. Sorkin promises that the film will be about more than Wall Postings and Youtube clips, it will follow the tale of the two creators as they collaborate in a Harvard dorm room to create the fastest growing Internet phenomenon ever, then how their relationship begins to waiver and eventually conclude with a 600 million dollar lawsuit.

Disney + Facebook = Huge PR For Alice In Wonderland

Yesterday marked the release date of the very first official movie trailer for Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland feature film due out next March. Although a lot of people out there already knew of this project, the folks over at Disney decided to make a big online push a few weeks ago. In an effort to generate as much online buzz before the big trailer release at Comic-Con yesterday, the marketing team behind the film decided to run a Facebook contest. They created three fan pages for the film. One was for loyal subjects of the Red Queen, another for loyal subjects of the White Queen and a final page for Disloyal Subjects of the Mad Hatter. Facebook users were encouraged to become fans of these pages and the whichever page gathered the most would present the trailer for the new film before anyone else.

The results were astounding as the Disloyal Subjects of the Mad Hatter ran away with the contest by gathering over 28,000 fans in a very short period of time. Although both the White and Red Queen lost, they too still managed to gather over 5000 fans themselves. Disney and Facebook came through with their agreement as fans of the Mad Hatter were treated to a sneak peak at the Alice in Wonderland trailer moments before the rest of the world.

From a marketing tactic this was quite brilliant. Although the film won’t even be released until March 2010, it is quickly becoming one of the most anticipated films of the year.

It really all boils down to strategic timing. This week marked the first day of Comic-Con where hundreds of thousands will be available to soak in all of the entertainment news first hand. Knowing this, Disney marked the date as one of huge importance. If you want to get the word out early, launch at an event that already has an established mass of fans.

Aaron Sorkin Writing Facebook: The Movie

Facebook The Movie

We all knew it was just bound to happen right? Well, the moment has finally arrived and a big-name producer / writer Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing and A Few Good Men) is currently writing a script that will center around the creation of Facebook. For those of you (probably only 1 person left in this world) who don’t know what Facebook is, it is the online network phenomenon that has swept across the globe attracting billions of users. The application is essentially the end-all for online communication where users can interact on many different levels in order to stay in touch with each other.

I won’t go into detail about Facebook because as I’m sure many of you are already aware of the power this application garners. Sorkin is now tasked to tell the story of how such an application came to be. I’ve done some research on the subject and found out that Facebook was actually initially created to help college students stay in touch. I’m assuming the script will focus around the creators and their troubles in starting such a huge business.

This is an amazing PR move for Facebook as they burst onto the scene a few years ago and their prowess in pop-culture is very slowly starting to slip away. The addition of networks like Twitter are slowly gaining prowess so I’m assuming the people behind Facebook see this as a way to stay in the limelight for a while. Sorkin on the other hand is an interesting choice to have pen the script. The West Wing was an amazingly successful television show, but it was a television show. He had multiple seasons to create drama and tell his story. Writing a feature film script restricts a lot of the story because of the time factor. It can be done well, as evidenced by some great films, but more often then not people walk away from the theater wondering if there was more to the story. Unlesss Sorkin can pull off an amazing script, I have a feeling people will walk away from a Facebook movie thinking there’s got to be more to it.
