Apple Removes ‘Sexy’ Apps For iPhone

si_iphone_app

In an interesting article published by the New York Times, it seems as though Apple has finally decided to do something about the adult content floating around in their App Store. Although the App Store was created for the public to create and share their own personal applications, some individuals have taken advantage of the freedom. The iPhone, iPod and all hand held devices that use iTunes as a store for applications is and always will be marketed to all ages, but with the considerable amount of SPAM and promotional applications, Apple has decided to filter out all of the adult oriented content.

The story became extremely hot when Sports Illustrated released an app of their own to accompany their annual swimsuit issue. Parents started to voice their concerns and Apple’s head of worldwide marketing Phillip Schiller responded with,

It came to the point where we were getting customer complaints from women who found the content getting too degrading and objectionable, as well as parents who were upset with what their kids were able to see.

In the wake of Schiller’s response, Apple began removing all adult content from their app store. But the question remains, was this the right move for a company that pushes creativity, the sharing of ideas and online developmental freedom? We’ll have to wait and see.

The End Of The Olympics; Now What?

The conclusion of the Vancouver 2010 Olympics marks an important day for marketing and PR firms. Not only will it signify one of the largest global media events in recent history, but it also represents the end of this event. And let’s be honest, marketing and sales are the real numbers we’re all looking for with the conclusion of the games. Just like the normal transition from one event to the next, it looks like giant media outlets are doing the same as they pack up their TV trucks. So what is next?

World Cup 2010 in South Africa

Without a doubt, the South Africa FIFA World Cup will be the next huge event the world will watch on their TV’s, read about in the papers and stream legally online. With just as much international pride (if not more) as the Olympics, you can bet that the sporting world will be glued to the drama as the world’s greatest football tournament commences this Summer.

The 2010 Master’s Tournament

Under normal circumstances The Master’s would only be considered a big event in the golfing world. Yes, the greatest golfers of the modern era gather to win the season’s biggest and most respected prize in the sport, but 2010 brings a twist that nobody could have predicted. The 2010 Master’s could be the triumphant return (or downfall of, depending on how you see it) of Tiger Woods. As his well documented family issues unfold in the tabloids, he’ll look to get back to what makes him great on the golf course this April.

Twitter Sitcom Nabs Bill Shatner

shatnerIn case you have been living without an Internet connect, newspaper, television and human contact for the past 2 years, there has been this communication sensation called Twitter that has sprung up all over the world. Now that we’ve got that out of the way, we can talk a little bit about the Twitter TV show pilot CBS has in works.

Shit My Dad Says isn’t necessarily about Twitter, but the micro-blogging sensation did get it’s start with the little blue bird. 29 year-old sensation Justin Halpern created the Twitter feed when he moved back into his parents’ home. He started the feed because of the interesting (often profanity laced) things his 73 year old father would say.

The success of Shit My Dad Says spawned not only Internet success for Halpern, but it looks like he could become a TV success as well. The Hollywood Reporter states that the original Captain Kirk himself, William Shatner, is set to play a character in Halpern’s pilot. Most signs are pointing in the direction of Shatner actually playing the father character. Although he is internationally known as the original captain of the Enterprise in Star Trek, Shatner has made a strong comedic name for himself since. He’s also gone on to court TV fame with his brilliant work on shows like The Practice and Boston Legal.

Conan Returning… To The Stage

conan-obrienAccording to the long and well documented deal Conan O’Brien had made with NBC upon his exit, he is not legally allowed to appear on his own television show until September of 2010. All of those rumors about Conan bringing his show to a network like Fox or Comedy Central can be put on hold through the summer because, legally, it cannot be done. But fear not Conan super-fans. Our favorite redhead talk show host isn’t going quietly into the night, in fact, he’ll probably be screamed into the night for a rumored live show now in the works.

Although nothing is finalized, Conan’s team has been working for the past two weeks with the William Morris Endeavor to book venues and dates across America. Why these venues and dates are being booked is still a mystery, but if history can prove anything, we could expect to see a traveling Co-Co show later this year.

Returning to the stage seems to be working for Conan’s friend Paul Reubens who has taken his famed character Pee-Wee Herman back to the LA stage. Whether or not this will work for Conan (and whether or not the rumors will be proved correct) will be a question we’ll all be waiting for.

Meet Team VISA

Big American companies aren’t the only ones getting their hands in the mix for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. VISA Canada is showing an unbelievable amount of athlete support by featuring Team VISA on their website. Team VISA consists of athletes ranging from snowboarders and speed skaters to para cross country skiers. The interactive web experience allows Canadian Olympic supporters to read up on some of the athletes that will be competing in Vancouver as well as experience some heavy VISA advertising.

Although Team VISA isn’t just supported by VISA (companies like Air Canada, Hertz and The Globe and Mail are also part of Team VISA), the website is heavily VISA focused and shows that the athletes we’ll all be seeing on television later this week should be considered more than flashes in the pan.

But as with many advertising opportunities with the Vancouver Games, VISA has also taken this opportunity to push some of their own campaigns. Specifically, VISA gift cards. With fresh new Olympic imagery, the VISA Olympic gift cards are being represented by three of Canada’s bigger banks in Royal Bank, Vancity and Citizen’s Bank. The banks aren’t the only ones in the mix here either as companies like Best Buy, RONA and Rexall are all pushing their brands through Team VISA.

So the question here is, are we cheering for Team VISA because we love our Canadian athletes, or because VISA wants to sell us gift cards? In any case, check out the link to Team VISA here and see for yourself.

Team VISA.

Coke’s Innovative Olympic Mobile Campaign

In conjunction with NBC, Coca-Cola has developed a brand new Olympic campaign set to launch for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games. The partnership between the US broadcasting giant and non-alcoholic beverage king will allow people from all over the US to follow US athletes during their foray into Vancouver over the next couple of weeks. The campaign focuses on US athletes expected to medal or at the very least do well enough to deserve a certain amount of press.

Picture 7

Known as the Coca-Cola Six-Pack, the mobile campaign in conjunction with the Open The Games, Open Happiness campaign,  ties together print media, television coverage and web updates all in the palm of hands. The hope is to gather a lot of national support for Olympic athletes, but at the same time show how companies like Coke and NBC are backing the games. Together with hand held updates, images, statistics and a custom built Coke WAP interface, the Six-Pack will also provide custom ring tones and phone sounds based on the games.

NBC and Coke see so much potential with the Coca-Cola Six-Pack that they have already signed a major deal to do the same in 2020 for the London Games.

Although it was never a question as to which companies would have a stranglehold on Olympic marketing, we can now safely say that Coke and NBC have gone beyond what we see on the streets.

Stephen Colbert Flashes His iPad

ipad-stephen-colbertSo there was this little event on TV this weekend called The Grammy’s. Not sure if anyone out there in internet-land has heard of it, but it’s basically this live show where every famous person in the world gathers in nice dresses and tuxedos to bask in their own glory. Under normal circumstances these are a bore beyond belief, but this year’s show gave us a little bit of tech in the mix.

Stephen Colbert showed how hip he is to the techno-kids these days by pretending to lose his list of nominees for some category everyone has already forgotten about. But instead of freaking out and making up the winner (which is what some celebs may have resorted to), Colbert opened up his suit jacket and pulled out his brand new iPad. Other than the Internet and various tech-based shows, this is the first time the iPad has been showcased on national TV since it’s unveiling last week.

How did the audience react? Well, as you’ll see, Jay-Z was impressed, but it didn’t convince everyone in the audience. Much in the same way the iPad hasn’t taken the world by storm yet, even famous people are having their doubts about it. Have a look below:

Apple Reveals Today

AppleLogoAll of the waiting and assuming can finally end today as Apple plans to unveil…. something. Although pretty much everyone with an Internet connection can probably assume this is going to be the unveiling of the much anticipated Apple iTable (or iPad or iSlate) today is still going to be an interesting day. Earlier this year tons of techno journalists were invited to a special event being put on by Apple on January 27th at 10AM PST. The rest of us will just have to wait for the blogs and Twitter updates.

Previous Apple events such as this have revealed the iPhone, the iMac and various versions of the Macbook – to assume this year’s unveiling will be something like the iTablet isn’t too much of a stretch. With so much already written about it (you can check out what The Elevator Pitch has written about it here) it is almost as if we would be surprised if it it was something else.

But the news shouldn’t come without healthy enthusiasm, especially since a lot of the journalists in the gaming world have also been invited. In an article currently posted on Crunch Gear, a writer has hinted that the new device is actually a gaming console. In any case, these times of the year are always exciting for the tech nerd – it’s like Christmas for Apple geeks.

What Commercials Will Super Bowl XLIV Bring?

superbowl

The day after the teams are finally set for Miami’s Super Bowl XLIV brings forth many questions. Sure you could wonder how the Colts‘ defense is going to stand up against the high-flying Saints or wonder how QB Drew Brees is going to perform in his first Super Bowl, but instead of trying to wrap your head around all of the game analysis, lets sit back and imagine what commercials we’ll all be blessed with.

2009 brought us some memorable pieces including the following:

Bud Light, Coke Zero, Career Builder, Cheetos, E-Trade and lots more.

Each new Super Bowl usually brings out the best in television commercial advertising and forces every ad company to really bring their A-game. Are we in for another year of the million dollar Pepsi commercials? Or maybe this is the year where Apple finally explains their strange ad from back on the 80’s. In any case, on February 7th, get your bowl of chips, cover them in dip, sit down on your corner of the couch and get ready for some ads. Oh yeah, and there’s some kind of game on in between the commercials.

Lady Gaga is the new Creative Director of Polaroid

polaroidIt puzzled many when Polaroid shut down production of their iconic cameras. To most, Polaroid was the first phase of instant digital photography. Although expensive at the time, the Polaroid experience provided photographers an instant look into the picture they just took. It had its own style, its on community and to this day when people see something similar, they immediately associate it with Polaroid.

When production shut down in 2008 it was a bit of a mystery. It wasn’t like they were losing a ton of money with the evolution of digital photography, so people questioned the decision. Well, the mystery has been solved, or revealed (depending on how you look at it).

It has been announced that pop-culture icon and musical performer Lady Gaga is the new Creative Director of Polaroid. Teaming the classic and iconic style in which Polaroid shoots with the new, modern look and feel that Lady Gaga provides is something that the people at Polaroid are hoping can breathe new life into their cameras. When asked about her new position, Laday Gaga responded with,

I am so proud to announce my new partnership with Polaroid as the creative director and inventor of specialty projects… The Haus of Gaga has been developing prototypes in the vein of fashion/technology/photography innovation – blending the iconic history of Polaroid and instant film with the digital era – and we are excited to collaborate on these ventures with the Polaroid brand
