Trends and world events often launch product sales beyond their expected numbers, but when the King of Pop Michael Jackson passed away, hardly anyone could have expected this kind of upward spike in digital sales. The news came down last week that MJ had passed away. Along with crying fans and nostalgic artists came music sales like nobody had ever seen before. The King of Pop had always done well with his digital music sales ever since his hits fro the 80’s become available for download, but in the last week the numbers made a huge jump. The previous total number of downloads for MJ’s tunes were about 48,000 and jumping to 2.6 million in one week is a major hike.
Unfortunately the hike in sales came with the news of the end of a legend. There are obviously endless reasons why this has occurred, but most can agree that the international news of his passing caused many people to want to remember him through music.
Specifically the digital album sales of titles like “Number Ones,” and “Thriller,” have jumped into the thousands. I don’t ever see Michael Jackson sales ever really staggering, but to jump from 48,000 to 2.6 million in one week is worth noting.
